What's Wrong With Bottled Water?
Do not drink bottled water, and here's why:
- 70% of all bottled water is just tap water!
- Bottled water is a rip off - consumers spend an estimate $7 billion on bottled water each year.
- Bottled water coolers have exposed reservoirs that can become contaminated with a biofilm if not sanitized on a routine basis (a 45 minute process).
- Biofilm is a green slime that attaches to wet plastic surfaces if not properly cleaned.
- Biofilm has been linked to Legionnaire's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis and more.
- 900,000 people each year become infected with waterborne disease.
- The bottle water industry is responsible for 1.5 million tons of plastic waste into the environment each year.
-
1.5 million barrels of oil is used annually to produce plastic water bottles for America alone - enough to fuel some 100,000 U.S. cars for a year.
- The bottled water you purchase is often in #1 PET or PETE bottles (polyethylene terephthalate), which may leach DEHA, a known carcinogen.
- According to the Climate Action Network, when some plastic bottles are incinerated along with other trash, as is the practice in many municipalities, toxic chlorine (and potentially dioxin) is released into the air while heavy metals deposit in the ash.
- The Container Recycling Institute estimates that 90% of plastic water bottles end up as either garbage or litter.
- Plastic accounts for 25% of the total volume of material sent to landfills every year and plastic water bottles can take as long as 1,000 years to biodegrade.
- Pumping water from the ground to make bottled water dries out fresh water springs, destroys habitats, devastates ecosystems, and drains freshwater aquifers.
- Plastics are the fastest growing sector in the waste stream and currently take up 25% of the volume of materials sent to landfills each year.
- The General Accountability Office estimates that 66% of Safe Drinking Water Act violations were not reported.
- FACT: Bottled Water has become under such scrutiny that the San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom has issued an order banning all bottled water because of the environmental impact and the dangers from the plastic used to manufacture the bottle! (See the complete list of bottled water bans.)
